The Dalles Fire Department Highlights Critical Water Safety Partnership

As summer recreation heats up on the Columbia River, The Dalles Fire Department is reminding residents that firefighting and water rescue are two sides of the same public safety coin. While the iconic red engines are a familiar sight, many may not consider the vital role our local firefighters play as first responders on the water.

“Our team trains rigorously for scenarios that blend these elements,” said Fire Chief Bob Palmer. “A boat fire at the marina, a vehicle in the river, or a medical emergency on a remote stretch of shoreline—these are all incidents where our dual capabilities are essential.” The department’s specialized water rescue team operates a dedicated craft and works in close coordination with the Wasco County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol.

This integrated approach was on display during a recent multi-agency drill at the Port of The Dalles. Crews practiced deploying from the fire station to a simulated vessel fire, emphasizing the swift transition from land-based to marine response. “The Columbia is our backyard,” Palmer noted. “Being prepared for emergencies on it is as crucial as being ready for a structure fire downtown.”

The connection runs deeper than response. Adequate water pressure and hydrant availability, managed by the City’s Public Works Department, are the lifeblood of fire suppression. Officials encourage homeowners, especially those in areas with limited hydrant access, to ensure clear access to their properties and to discuss any concerns with the fire department before an emergency arises.

As families head to the river to cool off, The Dalles firefighters stand ready, proving that their commitment to protecting the community truly knows no bounds—whether facing flames or navigating the currents of the mighty Columbia.
