Small Plane Makes Emergency Landing on SR 14, Pilot Uninjured
A single-engine aircraft made an unexpected landing on State Route 14 in Vancouver, Washington, on Tuesday afternoon, bringing traffic to a standstill but resulting in no injuries.
According to Washington State Patrol, the pilot of the Cessna 172 reported experiencing engine trouble shortly after takeoff from a nearby airfield. With limited options, the pilot executed an emergency landing on the eastbound lanes of the highway near the 164th Avenue exit.
“The pilot did everything right,” said a trooper on scene. “He maintained control, avoided vehicles, and put the plane down on the paved shoulder. It’s a textbook example of using your training in a high-pressure situation.”
The landing forced the temporary closure of eastbound SR 14 as crews worked to secure the scene and remove the aircraft. The incident caused significant traffic delays during the early afternoon, with backups stretching for miles. Drivers were advised to use Interstate 205 or Highway 500 as alternate routes.
The Federal Aviation Administration has been notified and will lead the investigation into the mechanical failure. The plane, which sustained minor damage, was later towed from the highway to a secure location.
For Oregon aviators and commuters who frequently cross the Columbia River, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of flight. It also highlights the skill of local pilots and the swift response of emergency crews in the Portland-Vancouver metro area when the unexpected occurs.
