FEMA’s Firefighter Grant Program Back in Action, Offering Potential Boost for Boardman Area Departments
After a year-long freeze, a critical federal grant program for firefighters is set to restart nationwide, a move that could provide a welcome financial infusion for local volunteer and combination departments in Morrow County and the City of Boardman. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is resuming its Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program following a federal court order.
The program’s suspension stemmed from a legal challenge regarding how FEMA considered race and gender in its grant evaluation process. With that injunction now lifted, fire stations across the country, including those serving our rural communities, can again apply for funds to purchase essential equipment, upgrade aging vehicles, and enhance training programs.
“This is significant news for departments operating on tight budgets,” said a local fire official who wished to speak generally about the program’s impact. “Grants like these can mean the difference between getting a new set of turnout gear that meets current safety standards or having to make do with older equipment. For a community like ours, where resources are always a concern, every bit of outside funding helps strengthen our emergency response.”
The AFG program is highly competitive, but local departments have successfully secured awards in the past for items like extrication tools and air packs. The resumption of funding opens a crucial window for area chiefs to identify their most pressing needs and prepare applications aimed at directly benefiting first responders and the residents they protect along the Columbia River and across our agricultural landscape.
