San José Climates to the Top: City Earns Elite ‘A’ Grade for Climate Action

San José has cemented its status as a global leader in the fight against climate change, earning a prestigious spot on the CDP Cities A List for its ambitious and transparent environmental efforts. This top-tier rating from CDP, a renowned international nonprofit, places San José among an elite group of cities worldwide recognized for taking bold steps to cut emissions and build resilience.

“This isn’t just an award; it’s a validation of our community’s commitment to a sustainable future,” said Mayor Matt Mahan. “From our residents adopting electric vehicles to our investments in clean energy and green infrastructure, San José is walking the walk.” The city’s achievement stems from its detailed reporting on climate risks and a comprehensive suite of actions outlined in its Climate Smart San José plan.

Key initiatives that caught the global evaluators’ attention include the city’s push for 100% carbon-free electricity for residents by 2027, a first for a major U.S. city. Ambitious building electrification codes, a growing network of electric vehicle charging stations, and innovative programs to protect vulnerable neighborhoods from extreme heat have also been critical to its high score.

With this recognition, San José joins the ranks of just 119 cities across the globe to receive the top CDP rating this year. City officials say the “A” grade provides a powerful tool to attract green investment and serves as a roadmap for accelerating local efforts. The honor underscores a clear message: in Silicon Valley, the drive for a cleaner, greener tomorrow isn’t just a talking point—it’s a core part of the city’s blueprint.
