Oregon’s Voting System Remains Unchanged as Ohio Bans Ranked Choice
While national headlines focus on Ohio’s recent ban on ranked-choice voting, Boardman residents will continue casting their ballots under Oregon’s long-established vote-by-mail system. The Ohio law, which prohibits ranked-choice voting in all state and local elections, highlights a growing national debate over how Americans elect their leaders.
Here in Morrow County, our elections are governed by Oregon law, which does not currently utilize ranked-choice voting. The system, which allows voters to rank candidates in order of preference rather than choosing just one, has been adopted in a handful of cities and states across the country, but faces opposition from some lawmakers who argue it adds unnecessary complexity.
“Our focus remains on ensuring secure, accessible, and transparent elections for every voter in Boardman,” said a local county clerk’s office representative. “Oregon’s vote-by-mail process is a model of convenience and high participation that we’re proud of.”
The discussion around voting methods serves as a reminder for local voters to verify their registration is up-to-date, especially with important local and state elections on the horizon. Morrow County residents can check their status through the Oregon Secretary of State’s website.
