Melbourne Police Nab Teen Over Disturbing ‘School Wars’ Social Media Trend

Victoria Police have confirmed the arrest of a 13-year-old boy in Melbourne’s northern suburbs, following a concerning investigation into violent social media posts. The content, part of a so-called “school wars” trend, actively encouraged students from different schools to organise and film physical fights.

Authorities were alerted after videos and messages promoting the dangerous challenges began circulating on popular platforms. The trend, which has seen sporadic outbreaks in other countries, appears to have taken a local foothold, causing significant alarm for parents and school communities across the city.

“This is not harmless banter or schoolyard rivalry. This is the deliberate orchestration of violence for online notoriety,” a police spokesperson stated. “We are treating this with the utmost seriousness. The welfare and safety of all young people involved is our primary concern.”

The arrested teen has been released pending further inquiries, with the investigation ongoing to identify others involved in creating or spreading the harmful material. Police are working closely with the Department of Education and individual schools in areas including Hume and Whittlesea to stamp out the trend before any serious injuries occur.

Melbourne child safety experts are urging parents to have frank conversations with their children about their online activity. “These trends prey on a desire for peer approval and clicks,” said Dr. Anya Sharma from the Royal Children’s Hospital. “We need to reinforce that sharing or participating in this content isn’t just wrong—it can have real-world, lifelong consequences for everyone involved.”
