Local Authorities Issue Urgent Warning Over Virtual Kidnapping Scams Targeting Travelers
Residents and travelers in our community are being urged to exercise extreme caution following a disturbing rise in a crime known as “virtual kidnapping.” While the original reports focused on a specific international resort city, local law enforcement confirms the digital nature of this scam means it can target anyone, anywhere, including right here at home.
Unlike a traditional abduction, a virtual kidnapping is an elaborate extortion scheme conducted entirely over the phone. Scammers use fear and misinformation to convince a victim that a loved one has been taken hostage. The perpetrators, often using spoofed caller IDs, will demand an immediate ransom payment, typically via wire transfer or cryptocurrency, while insisting the victim stays on the line and does not contact authorities or the supposed victim.
“The key is the pressure and the isolation,” explained a spokesperson for the local police department’s fraud unit. “They create a high-stress scenario where logic goes out the window. They’ll claim your family member is in grave danger, and that any call to police will result in violence. It’s a sophisticated psychological attack.”
Authorities advise that if you receive such a call, the most critical step is to try to independently verify the safety of your loved one. Hang up and attempt to directly call or message the person allegedly in danger. Do not engage with the scammer’s demands. Immediately after, contact local law enforcement.
“These criminals prey on our most basic instinct: to protect our families,” the spokesperson added. “Staying calm and breaking their script by making that verification call is your best defense. We want everyone in our community to be aware so they don’t become the next target.”
