Boydton’s Sojourn Students Embark on Southern Service Journey
While the winter chill still lingers in Mecklenburg County, a group of dedicated students from Boydton’s Sojourn program are packing their bags for a warmer mission. Instead of a typical spring break, these young adults are trading relaxation for service, heading south to lend their hands and hearts to communities in need.
The trip, a cornerstone of the Sojourn experiential learning curriculum, focuses on immersive cultural exchange and practical community aid. Students will participate in construction projects, environmental restoration, and outreach programs, working alongside local organizations. “It’s about stepping outside our comfort zone,” said one participating senior. “We learn so much in the classroom, but this is where we see how to apply it to real people and real problems.”
Local educators and parents see the journey as a vital investment. “This isn’t a vacation; it’s an extension of our classroom into the wider world,” explained a program coordinator. “Our students from Boydton, Chase City, and Clarksville will gain perspective on different ways of life while representing the spirit of service we value here in Southside Virginia.”
Fundraising for the trip was a community-wide effort, with bake sales, car washes, and donations from local businesses ensuring every student could participate regardless of financial means. As the students depart, they carry with them not just tools and supplies, but the well-wishes of a hometown proud to see its youth engaged in meaningful, compassionate work far beyond our county lines.
