Boardman’s Emerald Spirit: Local Athletes Gear Up for St. Patrick’s Day Runs
As the Columbia River begins to shimmer with the promise of spring, the sports community in Boardman is trading its usual blues for a vibrant shade of green. With St. Patrick’s Day on the horizon, local runners and fitness enthusiasts are lacing up their shoes, adding a festive twist to their training regimens.
While parades might be bigger in other cities, Boardman’s athletic pride shines through community-focused events. The annual “Shamrock Shuffle,” a friendly 5K fun run often organized by the Port of Morrow recreation group, is a staple, encouraging participants of all ages to don their most creative green gear. It’s less about breaking records and more about celebrating community health and Irish cheer along our scenic riverfront paths.
“It’s a great way to kick off the outdoor season,” says local cross-country coach, Maria Rodriguez. “We see families, high school athletes, and folks from the plants all coming together. The spirit is infectious—even if your only connection to Ireland is loving the color green.”
Beyond the run, the day sparks friendly rivalries on the courts and fields. Riverside High School often hosts “Green-Out” games for their spring sports teams, where basketball and baseball players sport green socks or accessories for luck. Local pubs and eateries, central to Boardman’s social scene, frequently host cornhole tournaments and trivia nights with a sports-themed, Celtic twist.
For Boardman, St. Patrick’s Day has become less about distant traditions and more about homegrown camaraderie. It’s a testament to the town’s ability to create its own traditions, blending a shared love for sport with an excuse to come together, celebrate our active community, and paint the town—even if just for a day—a brilliant emerald green.
