Boardman Residents Urged to Prepare as Statewide Flood Warnings Highlight Local Risk
While the recent state of emergency declared for flooding was centered on the opposite side of the country, the stark images serve as a critical reminder for Morrow County. Emergency management officials are urging Boardman residents to review their own flood preparedness plans as the region enters a season of unpredictable weather.
“We may not be facing an imminent crisis today, but preparedness is never a wasted effort,” said Morrow County Emergency Manager, Alex Rivera. “Our community’s proximity to the Columbia River and our agricultural irrigation systems mean water management is always a priority. A sudden shift in weather patterns or rapid snowmelt could change our situation quickly.”
Local agencies recommend that homeowners, especially those in lower-lying areas near the river or drainage canals, ensure they have emergency kits ready. These should include water, non-perishable food, medications, important documents, and a plan for family communication.
Farmers in the Boardman area are also being advised to check drainage on their properties. “A lot of our local economy is tied to the land,” noted Rivera. “Protecting equipment, livestock, and crops from potential water damage starts with proactive measures like clearing ditches and having a relocation plan for animals.”
Residents can sign up for Morrow County’s emergency alert system through the county website for direct notifications. “Look out for your neighbors, especially the elderly,” Rivera added. “A few minutes of preparation now can make all the difference later.”
