Boardman Eyes Coastal Charm as West Coast Towns Garner National Praise
While the sun-drenched piers of Pismo Beach, California, were just crowned the nation’s best coastal small town by a prominent travel publication, the recognition for West Coast communities has folks in Boardman reflecting on our own unique riverside allure.
The recent list, which featured several California destinations, highlights what many locals already know: small towns with access to water hold a special magic. Though we’re a river town rather than a coastal one, the Columbia River provides our backdrop for recreation, industry, and beauty.
“It makes you think about what we have right here,” said Mara Jenkins, owner of The Rivertap downtown. “We might not have ocean surf, but we have world-class windsurfing, stunning gorge views, and that tight-knit community feel those lists are always searching for.”
The article serves as a reminder of the economic boost such accolades can bring. Local business leaders see it as a cue to double down on promoting Boardman’s own assets—from our growing park system and marina to the annual Boardman Summer Fest—to both visitors and those looking to put down roots.
“Our strength is our authenticity,” stated City Councilor Ben Reyes. “We’re a working town with a growing agricultural and tech presence, nestled against a mighty river. We can celebrate California’s coastal towns while continuing to build up what makes our community in Morrow County a great place to live, work, and play.”
