Boardman Braves’ Season Ends in Heartbreaker, Community Rallies Behind Seniors
The Boardman Braves’ remarkable baseball season came to a sudden and emotional end Saturday afternoon, falling 4-3 to the Weston-McEwen TigerScots in the state quarterfinals. A late-game rally in the seventh inning fell just short, leaving players and fans on the edge of the diamond in stunned silence.
“These boys left everything they had on that field,” said Head Coach Mark Reynolds, his voice thick with emotion. “To come this far, to fight back the way they did in the final inning… I couldn’t be prouder. This one stings, but it doesn’t define their season or their character.”
The loss marks the end of high school careers for six dedicated seniors. The community is already mobilizing to honor them, with a potluck dinner planned for Tuesday evening at the Boardman Park pavilion. “We want to send these young men off right,” said organizer Maria Fernandez. “They’ve represented our town with grit and class all spring. This is our chance to show them how much that means to us.”
Despite the final score, the 2024 Braves will be remembered for reigniting local pride. Their deep playoff run brought packed bleachers and a palpable buzz to the riverfront. As the team buses returned to Boardman High, they were greeted by a line of cars honking in support—a small-town salute to a season of big heart.
