Sterling Junior High Evacuated After Portable Classroom Fire; Parents Question Alert System

A fire in a portable classroom at Sterling Junior High School prompted a full evacuation and a swift response from the Loudoun County Fire and Rescue System this morning, raising immediate questions from parents about the district’s emergency notification protocols.

Flames and smoke were reported just before 10:30 a.m. from one of the standalone units on the school’s campus. Students and staff were evacuated to a safe location at a neighboring facility without injury, according to fire officials. Crews from the Sterling Volunteer Fire Company and surrounding stations contained the blaze quickly, preventing it from spreading to the main school building.

While the response was praised, the incident highlighted concerns familiar to many Sterling parents. Several reported receiving official alerts from Loudoun County Public Schools well after seeing posts on community social media groups or receiving calls from their children. “My daughter texted me that she was safe outside before I got any email from the school,” said one parent, Maria Chen of the Sugarland Run neighborhood. “That delay is worrying.”

In a statement, LCPS officials confirmed the fire is under investigation and stated that standard emergency procedures were followed. They emphasized that student safety was never compromised but acknowledged the communication timeline is under review. “We understand parent concerns and are evaluating our notification systems to ensure timely, accurate information reaches our families first,” the statement read.

The portable classroom, used for science instruction, sustained significant damage. District officials are assessing options for relocating affected classes as the school week continues.
