Boardman’s Power Partner, Avangrid, Hits Major National Milestone
For residents of Boardman and Morrow County, the name Avangrid is synonymous with the towering turbines of the Leaning Juniper Wind Farm. This week, that local connection is part of a significant national achievement. Avangrid, Inc., the parent company of Portland General Electric and a major force in Oregon’s renewable energy landscape, has announced it now operates over 11 gigawatts (GW) of installed capacity across the United States.
This milestone underscores the growing scale of clean energy infrastructure, a sector in which Eastern Oregon plays a critical role. The power generated by local wind projects contributes directly to this expansive national portfolio, helping to fuel homes and businesses far beyond our county lines.
“Seeing a company we work with every day reach this level is a point of pride,” said local farm manager, Carlos Ruiz. “It reinforces that our region isn’t just farming and shipping; we’re powering progress. The operations and maintenance jobs right here are part of something much bigger.”
The 11 GW figure represents a diverse mix of wind and solar generation. For context, one gigawatt can power approximately 750,000 homes. This expansion signals continued investment in the nation’s energy transition, a trend that has brought both economic opportunity and new conversations about land use to our rural community.
As Boardman continues to evolve at the intersection of agriculture, industry, and energy, milestones like this highlight our area’s integral role in powering the broader grid. The success of national operators like Avangrid remains tightly woven into the local economy and the future of energy in the Pacific Northwest.
