Dramatic Coast Guard Rescue at God’s Thumb After Hiker Loses Trail
A coastal hike turned into a harrowing cliffside ordeal this week, leading to a dramatic helicopter rescue by the U.S. Coast Guard. The incident occurred at the iconic God’s Thumb formation near Lincoln City, a popular yet rugged destination on the Oregon coast.
According to officials, a man became stranded on a steep, unstable section of the cliff after reportedly losing the main trail. Unable to safely ascend or descend the slippery, vegetation-covered slope, he was in imminent danger of a fall. A companion who had remained on a safer part of the trail was able to call 911 for help.
The U.S. Coast Guard Sector North Bend immediately launched an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Facility Newport. The crew located the stranded hiker and, facing challenging winds, executed a precise hoist operation to lift him directly from the cliff face to safety.
“This rescue underscores the very real dangers of our coastline, even at well-known spots,” said a local Lincoln County Search and Rescue volunteer, who was staged nearby. “Trails can be deceptive, and conditions change rapidly. What starts as a photo opportunity can quickly become a life-threatening situation.”
The man was flown to a nearby airport where he was evaluated by emergency medical services; he reportedly refused further transport. The successful mission serves as a critical reminder for all Oregonians and visitors to prepare thoroughly, stay on established trails, and be aware that cell service is often unreliable in these remote, beautiful areas.
