State’s Top Environmental Panel Brings Key Meeting to Boardman
The Oregon Environmental Quality Commission (EQC), the powerful policy and rule-making board for the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), is set to hold its upcoming quarterly meeting right here in Boardman. This marks a significant opportunity for local residents, farmers, and industry leaders to engage directly with the state’s top environmental regulators.
Scheduled for late April, the two-day meeting will be hosted at the Port of Morrow’s conference facilities. While the full agenda is still being finalized, Port officials confirm that discussions pertinent to Eastern Oregon are expected to feature prominently. Topics likely to be on the docket include updates on the ongoing Lower Umatilla Basin Groundwater Management Area efforts, air quality monitoring in the Columbia River corridor, and the implementation of recent statewide rules on water quality and waste management.
“Having the Commission here in our community is a big deal,” said a Port of Morrow representative. “It allows them to see our operations and challenges firsthand, and it gives our community a direct line to voice concerns or ask questions without having to travel to Salem.”
The EQC meeting will include dedicated time for public comment, a chance for Boardman-area residents to speak on any DEQ-related issue. Environmental groups, agricultural stakeholders, and representatives from local data centers and food processing plants are all anticipated to attend. The DEQ encourages anyone wishing to provide testimony to sign up in advance through their website.
This meeting underscores Boardman’s central role in Oregon’s economic and environmental landscape, serving as a critical junction where industry, agriculture, and natural resource stewardship converge. Local leaders view the event as a prime chance to highlight both the progress made and the unique challenges faced in our region.
