UVA Women’s Basketball Seeks New Leader After Agugua-Hamilton’s Sudden Departure
In a surprising move that has sent ripples through the Commonwealth’s college basketball scene, the University of Virginia has announced a change in leadership for its women’s basketball program. Head coach Amaka “Mox” Agugua-Hamilton is departing the university after just two seasons at the helm.
The news, confirmed by UVA Athletics on Monday, leaves the Cavaliers searching for a new direction. Athletic Director Carla Williams stated the department will immediately begin a national search for a permanent replacement, emphasizing a commitment to building a championship-caliber program for Virginia fans.
Agugua-Hamilton arrived in Charlottesville in 2022 with a sterling reputation, having engineered a remarkable turnaround at Missouri State. Her tenure at UVA, however, failed to reach those same heights. The Cavaliers finished this past season with a 16-15 overall record and a 7-11 mark in the fiercely competitive Atlantic Coast Conference, showing modest improvement but falling short of postseason play.
For supporters in Virginia, the focus now shifts to the future. The ACC is a powerhouse league, and the hunt for a new coach will be closely watched from Bristol to Virginia Beach. The incoming leader will inherit a roster with potential and the challenge of re-energizing a program that has struggled to consistently compete at the top of the conference.
Associate head coach and former Cavalier great Sharnee Zoll will serve as the interim head coach during the transition. UVA officials have not provided specific details regarding the reasons for Agugua-Hamilton’s departure, simply citing a “change in leadership” as the program looks ahead to the 2024-25 season and beyond.
