Boardman Plaza Blaze Disrupts Business, Community Rallies

A Thursday afternoon fire at a commercial plaza on Boardman’s main thoroughfare sent smoke billowing into the sky, prompting the temporary closure of several neighboring businesses as emergency crews worked to contain the blaze.

Boardman Fire District crews responded to the scene just after 1:30 PM, finding significant smoke and flames at one unit within the strip. The quick response prevented the fire from spreading to adjacent storefronts, but smoke and water damage forced nearby shops to shutter their doors for the remainder of the day. No injuries were reported to civilians or firefighters.

“Our crews did an outstanding job making a fast, aggressive attack,” said Boardman Fire Chief Carl Reed. “The integrity of the shared walls kept it mostly contained, but we had to ensure all utilities were safe and the air was clear before letting anyone back in.”

For local residents, the sight of emergency vehicles blocking a familiar shopping center was a jarring reminder of the fragility of small-town commerce. “You see these places every day, you know the people who run them,” said longtime resident Maria Gonzalez, who watched from a cordoned-off parking lot. “It’s scary, but you also just immediately hope everyone is okay and that they can recover.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Boardman Fire District. While the directly affected unit sustained heavy damage, owners of surrounding businesses expressed hope they could reopen by Friday morning after air quality checks and cleanup. The incident has sparked conversations among local business owners about reviewing their own safety protocols and insurance coverage.
