Morrow County Courthouse Eyes Public Tours for America’s 250th Birthday
As the nation gears up for its 250th anniversary in 2026, local officials are looking for ways to connect our community to the historic milestone. While a probate court in Ohio recently announced public tours for the “America Celebrate 250” initiative, the spirit of the celebration is finding echoes right here in Eastern Oregon.
Morrow County, with its own rich history tied to the Oregon Trail, agriculture, and the development of the Columbia River region, is considering how to engage residents. The Morrow County Courthouse in Heppner, a cornerstone of local governance, could become a focal point for similar educational outreach.
“It’s about making our institutions accessible and reminding people of the story right here in our backyard,” said a county official familiar with early discussions. “While our courthouse isn’t a probate court hosting the exact same event, the idea of opening doors to explain how local government works fits perfectly with reflecting on 250 years of American history.”
Potential activities for Boardman and Morrow County could include historical displays in the Boardman Library about the area’s transformation, or guided talks at the Port of Morrow about the region’s economic journey. The goal is to foster a local conversation about America’s past, present, and future from a distinctly Eastern Oregon perspective.
Community groups are encouraged to brainstorm ideas for 2026. “This isn’t just a national event; it’s a chance to highlight our local heritage,” the official added. Residents with suggestions are urged to contact the Morrow County Historical Society or the Boardman Chamber of Commerce.
