Boardman Shop Owners Voice Concerns Over Teen Gatherings
Business owners along Boardman’s commercial corridors are speaking out about recurring issues they attribute to large groups of teenagers congregating in and around their establishments. The concerns, shared with local authorities, highlight a tension between providing a welcoming community space and maintaining a secure environment for customers and staff.
Several proprietors report that the gatherings, which often occur during evenings and weekends, have led to instances of disruptive behavior. This includes loitering that blocks entryways, excessive noise that disturbs patrons, and occasional confrontations when employees ask groups to move along. The situation has prompted some stores to reconsider their hours or increase on-site supervision during peak times.
“We want to be a part of this community for everyone, including our youth,” said one retailer who asked not to be named. “But when it starts to affect the safety and comfort of other customers and our ability to operate, we have to address it.”
The Boardman Police Department confirms they have received multiple calls from business districts and are aware of the complaints. Officers are increasing patrols in these areas as a preventative measure. Police officials emphasize they are seeking a balanced approach, aiming to discourage unlawful behavior while avoiding the unnecessary criminalization of young people simply gathering.
Community leaders suggest part of the solution may lie in creating more dedicated, positive spaces and activities for Boardman’s teens. In the interim, they urge parents to have conversations with their children about respectful behavior in shared public spaces.
