Boydton Residents Gear Up for World Cup Fever, But Watch Parties Will Be a Homegrown Affair

While major cities up north like Philadelphia are getting official FIFA fan zones for the 2026 World Cup, the buzz here in Boydton is about creating our own signature game-day atmosphere. The tournament, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is still two years out, but local business owners and sports fans are already thinking about how to bring the global event home to Mecklenburg County.

“We might not have a giant screen in a downtown plaza designated by FIFA, but we’ve got plenty of community spirit,” said Marla Jenkins, owner of The Rail Stop on Washington Street. “I’m already planning special hours and food specials for the big matches. Imagine the whole place erupting when Team USA plays—it’s going to be electric.”

Local officials see the international event as a chance to showcase Southern Virginia hospitality. Discussions are preliminary, but ideas include coordinating watch parties at the Boydton Municipal Park pavilion or encouraging restaurants and bars to decorate in the colors of competing nations. The focus is on a decentralized, hometown approach rather than a single centralized zone.

“This is a unique opportunity for us to come together as a community and share in a worldwide celebration,” said Boydton Mayor, Robert L. “Bobby” Jones. “We encourage our residents to think about hosting gatherings, wearing their colors, and making sure any visitors passing through on their way to matches feel welcome. The World Cup excitement isn’t just for the big cities; we can have our own version right here.”

With the U.S. Men’s National Team guaranteed a spot as hosts, anticipation is building for a red, white, and blue summer in 2026. Boydton may not be on FIFA’s official list, but locals are determined to make sure the beautiful game finds a passionate home in Southside Virginia.
