North Bergen Library Hosts Local Historian for Forgotten Battles of the Revolution Talk

While the history books often focus on Lexington and Yorktown, a pivotal chapter of the American Revolution unfolded right in our backyard. This Wednesday, the North Bergen Free Public Library invites residents to a special presentation that brings the fight for independence closer to home.

Local historian and educator, Dr. Martin Vance, will lead a discussion titled “Forgotten Battles: The Revolution in the Hudson Valley and Beyond.” The event aims to move beyond the standard list of famous clashes and shed light on the strategic struggles that occurred throughout New Jersey and New York, areas crucial to controlling the vital Hudson River corridor.

“We learn about Trenton and Princeton, but the war was a constant, grinding conflict here,” said Dr. Vance, a professor at New Jersey City University. “From the skirmishes in the Palisades to the fortifications that once dotted our shoreline, this region was a hotbed of espionage, supply line warfare, and desperate fights that decided the fate of a nation.”

The free presentation will explore how geography shaped the war’s strategy and highlight the often-overlooked contributions of local militias. Library Director Clara Mendez emphasized the program’s local angle. “North Bergen’s landscape was different, but the people living here were deeply affected by the war’s tides. This is about connecting our community’s soil to that larger national story,” she stated.

The event is part of the library’s ongoing “Community History Series” and requires no registration. It will be held in the main auditorium on April 17th at 7:00 PM. For more information, residents can visit the North Bergen Free Public Library’s website or call the main desk.
