South Medford Panthers Claw Past Sherwood, Punch Ticket to 6A Semifinals

The South Medford Panthers are two wins away from another state crown. The top-seeded juggernaut from Southern Oregon weathered a fierce challenge from the Sherwood Bowmen on Wednesday, securing a hard-fought 66-58 victory in the OSAA 6A girls basketball state quarterfinals at the Chiles Center.

From the tip-off, the game had the intensity Oregon high school basketball fans crave in March. Sherwood, representing the Portland metro area, refused to be intimidated by South Medford’s pedigree and national ranking. The Bowmen’s disciplined offense and scrappy defense kept the game within a single possession for much of the first half, silencing any thoughts of an early Panther runaway.

However, championship teams find a way. Led by the electric play of their star guards, South Medford began to impose its will in the third quarter. A signature full-court press generated key turnovers, which were converted into transition baskets that finally created some breathing room. Every time Sherwood mounted a charge, the Panthers had an answer, often from beyond the arc.

“That’s a tough, well-coached team over there,” said a South Medford assistant in a post-game radio interview. “We knew nothing would come easy at this stage. Our girls showed tremendous poise when it mattered most. This is why we play the schedule we do.”

The win sends South Medford, a point of pride for the Rogue Valley, into Friday’s semifinal round. For Sherwood, a remarkable season ends just short of the final four. The result sets the stage for a thrilling weekend of hoops in Portland, as the Panthers continue their quest to bring another championship trophy back to Medford.
