Victorian Court Jails Predator Who Used Fake Job Ruse to Assault Teen
In a chilling case that has underscored warnings about personal safety, a Melbourne man has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term for a predatory attack on a teenage girl. The Victorian County Court heard the offender used the promise of a fake job interview to lure his victim to a deserted office building in the city.
The court was told the 19-year-old victim, hopeful for employment, arrived at the agreed location only to be confronted by a horrifying reality. The man, whose identity remains suppressed, led her to an unused section of the building before violently sexually assaulting her. The attack left the young woman with profound physical and psychological injuries.
Justice Amanda Fox, in delivering the sentence, condemned the man’s actions as a “calculated and despicable breach of trust,” highlighting the vulnerability of job seekers. “You exploited a young person’s aspiration for work and independence, turning what should have been a step forward into a traumatic ordeal,” Justice Fox stated from the bench.
Victoria Police have reiterated safety advice for Melburnians, especially young people, arranging to meet strangers for work or sales. They recommend always informing a friend or family member of your whereabouts, insisting on meeting in a busy public place initially, and trusting your instincts if a situation feels wrong.
Support services in Victoria, such as the Centre Against Sexual Assault (CASA), have praised the victim’s courage in coming forward, which was pivotal in securing the conviction. The sentence sends a strong message that such predatory behaviour will be met with the full force of the law in our state.
