Melbourne Braces for Battering Winds as Northern Deluge Eases
Melburnians are being urged to batten down the hatches as a powerful cold front sets its sights on the state, promising a day of damaging winds. The blustery change comes as a major rain event finally begins to ease over northern Australia.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for much of Victoria, with winds expected to ramp up throughout Wednesday. Gusts could reach 90 to 100 km/h across central and eastern districts, including metropolitan Melbourne and the elevated suburbs.
“It’s a classic springtime blast, but this one has some serious bite,” said a senior forecaster. “We’re looking at the potential for damaging winds that could bring down tree branches and create hazardous driving conditions, particularly for high-profile vehicles on the West Gate Bridge and other exposed routes.”
Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items like trampolines, garden furniture, and bins before the winds peak. The State Emergency Service is on standby, reminding people to stay clear of fallen power lines and to avoid travel during the worst of the weather.
Meanwhile, the intense rainfall that has flooded parts of the Northern Territory and Queensland is showing signs of weakening. While the north begins its clean-up, Victoria’s focus shifts from rain to gales, marking a dramatic shift in weather fortunes across the continent.
