Ashburn Parks Join National Push to Level the Playing Field for Young Female Athletes
In a move that resonates with local families, the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) has kicked off a major national initiative aimed at tearing down the barriers that keep girls from participating in sports. The “Get Her in the Game” campaign, now being promoted through community hubs like those in Ashburn, seeks to address a persistent gap in youth athletics.
“We see incredible young talent in our programs, but the data shows girls are still dropping out of sports at higher rates than boys,” said a spokesperson for the Loudoun County Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services. “This campaign gives us a framework to look at everything from program scheduling and cost to coaching and community culture.”
The effort targets key obstacles identified by the NRPA, including lack of access, prohibitive costs, and social stigma. For Ashburn parents, this could mean more flexible and affordable all-girls leagues in soccer, basketball, and softball at community centers, as well as initiatives to recruit and train more female coaches as role models.
“It’s about making sure our daughters have the same opportunities to build confidence, learn teamwork, and develop a lifelong love of fitness as our sons do,” the spokesperson added. The campaign emphasizes that sports participation is linked to better academic performance, mental health, and leadership skills.
Local park and rec officials encourage families to reach out with their ideas and experiences to help shape more inclusive programs. The goal is clear: to ensure every girl in Ashburn who wants to play has a clear path to the field, the court, or the pool.
